Trump spiritual advisor: If Jesus had been an illegal immigrant he wouldn’t be the messiah

I’m just a simple unfrozen atheist caveman but I’m pretty sure this is extremely, weirdly wrong. There’s a passage in the Bible, as I recall, in which Jesus explicitly distinguishes between what’s owed to Caesar and what’s owed to God. And even if you didn’t know that passage, a six-year-old could reason his way to grasping that laws made by sinful human beings can’t possibly be the yardstick for sinfulness in God’s eyes.

This is the spiritual advice Trump is getting?

I hope America’s elderly civil-rights protesters have atoned to the Almighty for “sinning” by disobeying Jim Crow laws.

The Gospel of Matthew describes Jesus and his parents Mary and Joseph fleeing to Egypt shortly after Jesus’s birth to escape King Herod, who sought to kill the infant.

“I think so many people have taken biblical scriptures out of context on this, to say stuff like, ‘Well, Jesus was a refugee,’” [Paula] White told CBN. “And yes, he did live in Egypt for 3 1/2 years. But it was not illegal. If he had broke the law then he would have been sinful and he would not have been our Messiah.”

He was executed for violating Roman law, which should disqualify him from being the messiah by her own logic. I know she’s “recognized as a heretic by every orthodox Christian, of whatever tribe,” but for fark’s sake, she could at least put some thought into her heresy.

Also, what’s with this entire CBN segment? There’s value to showing that ICE is doing its best to make illegal-immigrant kids comfortable while they wait for adjudication, but there’s a reason the child-separation policy polled roughly as well as melanoma does. Not a word here about the human costs of the policy alongside the benefits of stronger borders — in a segment on an overtly Christian network?

Exit question: How long until Trump says at a rally that Jesus wants tougher enforcement because Pastor Paula told him so?
